EdTEC is situated in a rural community close to the 3rd biggest city in Kenya (Kisumu) about 70 minutes' drive away. We are situated beautifully on the shores of Lake-Victoria close to the overpopulated and slum like fish-landing beaches, nature trails and the town centre.
In recent years Mbita has developed and become a lively semi-urban town with interesting cultural activities and many possibilities for an active life in sports. Also Mbita is a place for music festivals, cafés and live band. Kenya's capital city (Nairobi) is 300 miles (10 hours) drive away. From Mbita it is also possible to take a ferry to our neighboring countries, Tanzania and Uganda, from which there is easy access to landlocked countries like Rwanda and Southern Sudan.
We don't have boarding facilities yet and students have to walk from school to their homes in the morning and evening (for secondary) while primary school children are walking to school in the morning, lunchtime and evening). We lack most of the educational facilities children in town or the developed world enjoys and do take for granted. We lack laboratories, classrooms and even toilets.
Interesting places to see and learn about in our community are:
Rusinga Island: the first man (Africana Proconsul) remains were dugged up in Rusinga by a Briton Researcher Louis Leakey in 1947. Rusinga island is also the home of affluent politician the late Tom Mboya, flamboyant, Kenyan pre-independence Kenyan politician who was assassinated.
Ruma National Park: Is the home to rare species and flora and fauna. It's only 12 miles from EdTEC and Mbita town.
Mbasa Islands: commonly known as the Bird's Island a gazetted national and international bird's sanctuary in the middle of Lake-Victoria and accessible by boat from Mbita town (15 minutes sail)
Kit Mikayi: It's believed that a man and his wives turned into stones and this is a tourist attraction point in the Western Kenya.
Kakamega Forest: The only remaining tropical rain forest in Eastern Africa.
Thim Lich Ohinga: A revered foot hill almost 15 miles from Mbita town. It has cultural and traditionl ties with the local inhabitants.
